Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Straw Bracelet

Hello!

Today we're making a straw bracelet, but the same method can be applied to make a necklace too.

To make these yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:

    • Plastic Straws
    • Pipe Cleaner
    • Scissors

    Step 1:

Take your straws and cut some pieces off that are about 1cm or slightly bigger.

    Step 2:

Decide if you will have a colour pattern with your bracelet or whether it will be all one colour or completely random.

Thread your straw piece onto your pipe cleaner and repeat until your pipe cleaner is full covered.

    Step 3:

Bring your pipe cleaner ends together to make a circle and twist the ends together so it's tight.

Tuck the sharp ends flat and into one of the straw pieces. Slide the straw over the connection so it's smooth the whole way round.

    When you're done...

Have a look around your house to see what other things you could use instead of a pipe cleaner. Here we used a piece of string:

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Washi Tape Crown

    Hello!

Today we're making a washi tape crown!

To make these yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:

    • Cardboard Tube
    • Washi Tape
    • String or Elastic
    • Scissors
    • Sharp Pencil or a hole punch

    Step 1:

Take your first washi tape, and wrap it around the base of your cardboard tube. Make sure to keep your tape as straight as possible to the edge of the cardboard.

You can cover your tube with the same tape or you can layer like we have below. Cover your tube with washi tape, making sure to keep each layer as straight as possible. Try to keep the overlap lines in the same place to keep the front of your crown looking smooth.

    Step 2:

Decide which end of your tube will be the top of your crown. Cut long triangles into the top of your crown.

We went down to the third layer of washi tape, but you can make as many triangles as needed and as deep as you'd like.

    Step 3:

Take your sharp pencil or hole punch and carefully make a hole either side of your crown, about 1cm from the base.

Make sure the line where your washi tape meets up is at the back of your head and your holes line up.

Take your string or elastic and tie each end through each hole, double knotting if needed.

    When you're done...

Think of some other ways you could attach your crown to your head. We added our crown to a headband but you could put it onto a hair clip or a bobby pin.

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Origami Flower

    Hello!

Today we're making Tulip style origami flowers.

To make these yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:

    • x2 square pieces of paper of exactly the same size
    • Something to be your stem (pipe cleaner, lolly stick, straw etc)
    • Scissors
    • Glue Stick

    Step 1:

Take your square and fold it diagonally in half, corner to corner.

    Step 2:

Point your triangle upwards and fold in half from bottom corner to bottom corner. Then open it back out.

    Step 3:

Fold one bottom corner upwards from the middle of the triangle (where the line is) towards the top point to just past the halfway point between the bottom point and the top point.

    Step 4:

Repeat step 3 with the other side.

    Step 5:

Fold the corner at the side, no more than 1cm in.

    Step 6:

Repeat step 5 with the other side.

Turn your flower over and it should look like this:

    Step 7:

Following steps 1 to 6, make another flower.

    Step 8:

Take your glue stick and glue the folded side of one of the flowers.

Place your stem, (for our flower we used a pipe cleaner but you could use a straw or a lolly stick) in the centre of the flower.

Glue the folded side of the second flower and stick this over your stem and other flower.

    When you're done...

Have a look around your house to see what other things you could use to make your flowers. We've tried with a magazine and a newspaper but you could try with coloured paper as well. Let us know what else could be used by commenting below.

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Stamps

    Hello!

Today we're making stamps from things you can find around your house.

To make these yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

All of our stamps require paint.

    Stamp 1:

    You will need:

    • Cardboard or Sponge
    • String
    • Scissors
    • Glue

Cut a small piece of cardboard or a piece of sponge. Cut some pieces of string off. Glue your string to your cardboard/sponge in any pattern you like and leave to dry.

Once dry, take a brush and paint onto the string (trying to avoid the cardboard/sponge backing). Then use your stamp on your piece of paper.

Have a think about what kind of design you could make. A letter, a stick figure or something random?

    Stamp 2:

    You will need:

    • Cotton Bud

Take your cotton bud and dip it into your paint. Dab this straight onto you paper.

    Stamp 3:

    You will need:

    • Make Up Brush

If you have an old make up brush lying around, use this to dip into your paint. I used a stippling brush for our stamp, but see how other brushes work when you dab them.

    Stamp 4:

    You will need:

    • Marshmallows (big and mini)

If any of your saw our caterpillar printing video last week (blog post here), you'll know that we used big and mini marshmallows as stamps. Take your marshmallow and dip it into the paint and then dab onto your paper.

    Stamp 5:

    You will need:

    • Drinking Straw

Take a drinking straw and dip the end into your paint. Dab this onto your paper to create small circles.

    Stamp 6:

    You will need:

    • Milk Carton Lid

Take a milk carton lid. If you use to open side, you can create an open circle. If you dip the closed size you can create a full, closed circle. You could also use a lid instead of cardboard or a sponge for Stamp 1.

    When you're done...

Have a look around your house to see what other things you could use as a stamp.

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Play Dough

    Hello!

Today we have a great activity that is not only a fun thing to make with your little ones, but also something fun to play with after! Homemade Play Dough!

To make this yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:
    • Flour (128g)
    • Salt (64g)
    • Cooking Oil (1tbsp)
    • Water (240ml)
    • Food Colouring (a few drops)

    Step 1:

Add your flour, salt, cooking oil and water to a mixing bowl and mix together with a spoon. Stir until you have a doughy consistency.

If your mixture is too doughy or stringy, slowly add some more water. If your mixture is too watery, slowly add more flour.

    Step 2:

Once your mixture has a nice, doughy texture, start kneading it and mixing with your hands.

    Step 3:

When your dough is ready. Decide how many colours you'd like to make and separate your dough into that many pieces. Roll these pieces into balls and flatten slightly to create a small bowl shape. Add a few drops of food colouring to the centre of each 'bowl' and gently fold the dough around the edges.

This can get quite messy! If doing this by hand, it might be a good idea to wear gloves! I would recommend putting your dough into a small bowl and mixing your food colouring with a spoon.

    Step 4:

Leave the dough for a few minutes with the food colouring to set. If your mixture has become a bit too sticky from the food colouring, add a large pinch of salt and fold into your dough.

    When you're done...

Have a think of some things you could add to your dough to make it a little bit more fun. How about adding some glitter or some sprinkles? Can you use some stamps to make some patterns?

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Pasta Rainbow

    Hello!

With children around the UK putting rainbows in their windows for NHS staff and for children to 'rainbow hunt' on their daily walks, we thought it would be fun to show you how to make a rainbow pasta picture!

To make this yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:
    • Rainbow Template
    • Pasta (We used Penne)
    • Paint
    • Glue (PVA and Stick)
    • Cotton Wool

    Step 1:

Download our Rainbow Template here. You can design your own rainbow template with as many rainbow stripes as you like. Don't forget to add the clouds at the each end!

    Step 2:

Add some pasta to a bowl with your choice of paint. Mix the paint until your pasta has a nice, even coverage. Leave your painted pasta overnight to dry.

    Step 3:

Take your glue stick and glue one cloud. Take the cotton wool and stick small clumps onto your cloud (trying to stay in the lines!). Repeat for the second cloud.

    Step 4:

Take your first batch of coloured pasta. Take your PVA glue and glue one side of your pasta piece. Carefully place your pasta piece in between the lines of your rainbow. Continue with your first colour until your rainbow slice is filled. Repeat this process with your other colours.

    Step 5 (Optional):

If you find your picture a little too heavy to hang. Take some cardboard and cut it to an A4 size. Glue down your picture to the cardboard to reinforce your picture.

    When you're done...
Have a think of other types of pasta you could use for your rainbow? Can you think of other items around your house that is colourful that could be glued onto your rainbow?

Kayleigh's Crafts - Make Your Own Marshmallow Printed Caterpillar

    Hello!

This is a lovely springtime craft for you, a marshmallow printed caterpillar!

To make this yourself, have a look at our YouTube video or follow this step-by-step guide.

    You will need:
    • Paint
    • Paper
    • Pen
    • Marshmallows (big and mini)
    • Glue (optional)

    Step 1:

Take a plain bit of paper and draw a background for your caterpillar. Our picture is a blue painted background for the sky with glued shredded paper for the grass.

    Step 2:

Take a big marshmallow and dip it into your green paint. Wipe any drips and then stamp the paint onto your paper. Repeat this step until you have your design caterpillar length. We went for 5 green circles for the body.

    Step 3:

Take a clean big marshmallow and dip it into your red paint. Wipe any drips and then stamp once at the end of your caterpillar body, to create the head.

    Step 4:

Take a small marshmallow and dip it into the green paint. Wipe any drips and then stamp 2 'legs' to every 1 large body segment.

    Step 5:

Once the caterpillar is dry, take a pen and draw on your face and some antennae.

    When you're done...

Left over marshmallows? Why not glue them above your caterpillar to create some clouds? We used PVA glue to attach 5 mini marshmallows in the pattern below to create our clouds:

Instead of marshmallows, what else can you use to as a stamp for your caterpillar?
